Ocean Mall FIFA 19 Farewell Tournament

Ocean Mall FIFA 19 Farewell Tournament

When everything was prepared and in order, a couple of days before the event, we got the news that the Sri Lankan national cricket team is landing in Karachi for ODI matches on Friday and Sunday. This only meant one thing, the National Stadium/Karsaz Road leading will be closed leading all the traffic to alternate routes which means our participants who are coming from the other side of Sharah-e-Faisal may face heavy traffic congestions. Not only this, many would even want to watch the match at the stadium or at home rather than playing a FIFA tournament.

Since everything was already prepared, we had no choice but to go on with the selected dates, what we were however unaware of, was that this would be the least of our worries. Friday came with thick grey clouds and before we could realize what’s about to happen, Karachi was soaked in rain-water. Against all odds, some enthusiastic FIFA athletes made their way through the storm and flooding streets and so we began. Thankfully, it did not rain for the rest of the weekend and we were able to meet our expected number of 128 players.

Things kicked off with the group stages where the best were separated from the rest as we saw 64 top players make their way through their respective groups. One of these qualifying players was our one and only female athlete, Tuba who had a message to share with the female gamers of Pakistan.

On the day of the Finals those 64 players were shuffled and faced each other in 6-minute knockout matches. The real surprise actually came in the quarter-finals when Talha Siddiqui beat tournament-favorite Zain Ali Shah 4-3 in the extra-time of a very intense match that could have gone either way. Then, when the odds were all in Talha’s favor we were faced with yet another shocker as Farmal beat him in the very next round and reserved his spot in the final. From the other side, Arham Ghori made his way to the finals defeating the Rehman brothers, Areeb and Ezan in the quarters and semis respectively. Areeb and Ezan were also without doubt amongst the top players of the tournament after making a name for themselves with their performances in B. Lab FIFA Championship. Farmal and Arham proved that there are more than just a few talented players in Karachi who are yet undiscovered by the community. Farmal then went on to win the final and become the ultimate champion of the 3-day competition.

Closing this off, we would like to thank each and every one of you who participated or came to support your friends, credits to out moderators; Zain Ali, Zia Ali, Talha Siddiqui, Ashar Abbas and Ghanim for working hard to make the event a success and a shout-out to our sponsors and partners Ocean Mall, Betty Crocker, Sobremesa, and Pizza & Pasta Co.
